GU’s Architecture Faculty and Students Reflect on “Heritage for Tomorrow” Workshop

The Faculty of Architecture at Galala University recently concluded the “Heritage for Tomorrow” workshop, held from July 6th to 16th, 2024, in Port Said. This event provided a remarkable opportunity for learning and collaboration, focusing on innovative strategies for the integrated rehabilitation of Bazar Abbas and its surrounding neighborhoods.

Participants explored various aspects of heritage conservation, including adaptive reuse of built heritage, preservation of intangible heritage, city rebranding, public space improvement, environmental sustainability, cultural tourism promotion, and sustainable mobility and infrastructure integration. The workshop was part of the “Bazar Abbas: Recovery Lab of Port Said” project, funded by the British Council’s Cultural Protection Fund (CPF).

The project team included esteemed members from BTU Cottbus – Senftenberg, the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning, the Chair of Landscape Architecture, the Middle-East-Cooperation Unit, Galala University, Al-Yakaniya for Heritage and Arts, Port Said Ala Ademo, and Alliance Française de Port-Saïd.

This collaborative effort has provided invaluable insights and practical tools for the recovery process of Port Said, a city known for its unique blend of local architecture and European modernism, shaped by its vibrant history.
