In a three-day workshop, Galala University hosted the “Earth Construction Workshop,” inviting students and participants to experience the art and practicality of rammed earth building. Organized in collaboration with the Egyptian Sustainable Urbanism Lab (ESU Lab) at Mansoura University and the Benna Foundation, the event aimed to promote sustainable building practices by teaching participants the fundamentals of earth construction—a method renowned for its eco-friendly, resilient, and aesthetically pleasing characteristics.
Held on the scenic grounds of Galala University, the workshop offered participants a unique hands-on experience in building with natural materials. Over the course of three days, attendees learned about sustainable construction techniques, including the following:
- Tools and Equipment: Participants were introduced to the essential tools and equipment required for rammed earth construction, gaining practical knowledge of their uses and functions.
- Building the Framework: Under expert guidance, attendees constructed the framework for a rammed earth wall, learning the importance of precision in setting up a stable, functional foundation.
- Material Testing: The workshop covered techniques for testing and evaluating local earth materials, ensuring their suitability and durability for sustainable building.
- Mix Design Creation: Participants developed custom mix designs tailored for rammed earth construction, emphasizing the balance between strength, aesthetics, and environmental impact.
- Ramming Techniques: The heart of the workshop involved learning and applying ramming techniques to build a real rammed earth wall, allowing participants to understand the physical and technical aspects of this ancient building process.
The workshop featured hands-on activities, in-depth discussions, and expert insights from leading academics and industry professionals in sustainable architecture. Participants left with a foundational understanding of earth construction and its potential to address environmental challenges, from reducing carbon footprints to utilizing local resources.
By hosting the “Earth Construction Workshop,” Galala University demonstrates its commitment to innovative and sustainable design practices, encouraging students to engage with environmentally responsible building techniques. This collaboration with ESU Lab and Benna Foundation provides a valuable platform for students and aspiring architects to explore the future of sustainable construction in Egypt and beyond.
