Galala University welcomed Dr. Masixole Lugongolo, a distinguished research scientist, and Charles Maphanga, a devoted Ph.D. student, from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Bio-Photonics Centre in Pretoria, South Africa. The visit, organized by the Program of Molecular Biotechnology, aimed to harness the collective research potential of both institutions and foster collaboration in the pursuit of scientific excellence.
During their visit, Dr. Masixole Lugongolo and Charles Maphanga engaged in productive discussions on joint projects, postgraduate student supervision, and shared research interests. The exchange of ideas and expertise between Galala University and CSIR Bio-Photonics Centre is expected to yield significant advancements in the field of molecular biotechnology.
As part of the visit, Dr. Masixole Lugongolo and Charles Maphanga delivered two lectures. Dr. Masixole Lugongolo presented on “Optical biosensors for the detection of human immunodeficiency virus,” shedding light on innovative approaches to detecting and combating this global health challenge. Charles Maphanga’s lecture, titled “Photonics-based biosensing for the detection of anti-TB antibodies,” provided valuable insights into the application of photonics in tuberculosis research.
The guests praised Galala University’s advanced laboratory facilities, with a specific focus on the biological applications of nanomaterials. Dr. Masixole Lugongolo, Charles Maphanga, and the CSIR Bio-Photonics Centre delegation had the opportunity to witness firsthand the cutting-edge technology and research capabilities available at Galala University. During their stay, the visiting scientists met with Prof. Dr. Mohamed El Shinawi, GU President.
