White blood cells are a major component of the body’s immune system. Indications for a WBC count include infectious and inflammatory diseases; leukemia and lymphoma; and bone marrow disorders. Hemoglobin (Hb) is the protein in red blood cells responsible for delivering oxygen to the tissues. To ensure adequate tissue oxygenation, a sufficient hemoglobin level must be maintained. A platelet count is most often used to monitor or diagnose conditions that cause too much bleeding or too much clotting.
